Third La Serena School for Data Science 2015: Applied Tools for Astronomy

This school is an intensive week of interdisciplinary lectures and hands-on activities focused on applied tools for handling big astronomical data. The curriculum is designed for senior undergraduate students and early graduate students in the fields of astronomy, computer science, statistics and mathematics, introducing the students to existing tools and techniques to explore the large datasets of today and preparing them to use the massive astronomical databases of the future.

The school is sponsored by AURA, the LSST Project, and NOAO, with funding the National Science Foundation (NSF), together with our partners in Chile including Conicyt, the Center for Mathematical Modeling of the University of Chile (CMM-UChile), the Millennium Institute of Astrophysics (MAS), Universidad de La Serena and Reuna.

The application for the year 2015 is from April 01 to May 15, 2015. Scholarships are available for U.S. and Chilean students to cover travel expenses and most of the costs during the week spent in La Serena, with the support of institutions such as NSF, AURA, NOAO, LSST, Conicyt, MAS and CMM of UChile. Enrollment each year is limited to 40 participants, so applications will be reviewed based on merit and invitations will be sent out after the registration deadline.
