Math at Universidad de Chile reaches prominent places in Shanghai Ranking

The Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) places Universidad de Chile in the World Top 150 in Mathematics. The university is the main Latin American higher education institution in the subject, according to the Ranking of Shanghai. It shares the position with Universidad Autónoma de México, shows the list by the University of Jiao Tong.

“This achievement is the result of a 50-year work in consolidating research and training in the discipline,” says Héctor Ramírez, a researcher at Center for Mathematical Modeling (CMM) and director of the Department of Mathematical Engineering (DIM).

Casa de Bello develops this area in the Faculty of Physical and Mathematical Sciences –through DIM and CMM– and in the Department of Mathematics of the Faculty of Sciences. The ranking listed it since 2014. Now, the institution rises and shares position 101-150 with prestigious universities. California, Davis (United States), Humboldt Berlin (Germany), Leeds (United Kingdom), Bordeaux, Normal School Superior of Lyon (France), Sapienza of Rome, Autónoma of Barcelona, Complutense of Madrid (Spain), the Normal University of Peking (China), and others are in this group.

For Alejandro Maass, CMM director, “the outstanding place that occupies Universidad de Chile for several years as well as the presence of three other Chilean universities in the ranking show the development in the quality got by Chilean mathematics, which has transformed into a strategic resource for the technological development of the country, in public policies as well as in industry and other sciences”.
