CMM lectured Data Science course at ECLAC

A total of 20 ECLAC statisticians, sociologists and economists attended the first course on Introduction to Data Science, lectured by the Modeling Center at the international organization.

In seven sessions, the professionals had the opportunity to catch up with the latest tools for data analysis. The institution seeks to improve the internal studies but also have updated tools. This aims to deal in a proper way with other organisms that develop this type of analysis in the region.
Understanding the learning of machines as an essential tool in data science was the overall purpose of the program. Thus, the class learned about fundamental tools such as linear regression, classification, clustering, neural networks, and visualization and reduction of dimensionality. The course concluded with a case study carried out with data of the own ECLAC.

“The students told me that they were very happy. They enjoyed the course feel better equipped to implement modern Data Science techniques to their own data,” recalls researcher Felipe Tobar, who lectured the course.

At the end of the course, Tobar and the group talked about future projects to continue training: “Not only restricted to ECLAC’s Chilean office, but also considered other United Nations’ units.”
