Math at U. of Chile reaches relevant places in Shanghai Ranking for fourth time

The Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), also known as the Ranking of Shanghai, ranked Universidad de Chile among the best South American academic institutions in Mathematics for the fourth time.

For Alejandro Maass, director of the Center for Mathematical Modeling, “Chile has reached a relevant position in the development of mathematical research and has established itself as a country that produces this science. Undoubtedly, this is reflected in the academic rankings, where several Chilean universities appear among the 400 most relevant in the world.”

“Being for four consecutive years uninterrupted in this list, as the leader in Chile and among the first places in the continent, is the result of more than 50 years of work,” says Joaquín Fontbona, director of the Department of Mathematical Engineering (DIM) and researcher CMM. “We are fortunate to be in a faculty and a university that understand that teaching and fundamental research and applied vanguard mutually enhance each other, and that makes a difference.”

The university does research on this discipline in the Faculty of Physical and Mathematical Sciences -through the DIM and the CMM- and at the Mathematics Department in the Faculty of Sciences.

It has appeared in the ranking since 2014 in a field that is highly competitive globally. In the 2018 version of the ranking, it shares the 201-300 position with other Latin American institutions such as the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (Brasil), University of Buenos Aires (Argentina) and Universidad Católica (Chile) and others as prestigious as the Catholic University of Leuven (Belgium), University of Sichuan (China), University of Goettingen (Germany), University of Newcastle (United Kingdom), University of Nagoya (Japan), Arizona State University (United States), National University of Australia, Complutense University of Madrid (Spain) , University of Barcelona (Spain) and Rome University III (Italy), among others.
