The management of Massive data en Mining, Astronomy and Biomedicine was the focus of the CMM Symposium on advanced applications in mathematics and computer sciences

  • • In San Pedro de Atacama, about 50 researchers drawn by CMM to exchange new concepts and ideas raised to manage the gigantic universe of data that will be generated by diverse academic and industrial activities in the near future.

The CMM Symposium 2012 took place in July 7-10, hosting this year the 7th version of the AccessNova Forum, an international meeting held biannually alternatively in Chile and Japan since 2000, where the latest scientific and technological developments that make an ever increasing use of applied mathematics and information communication technologies (ICT) were thoroughly analyzed and reviewed .

The annual symposium organized by the Center for Mathematical Modeling (CMM) of the School of Engineering and Science of the University of Chile, attracted this time in San Pedro de Atacama about 50 networks and ICT research leaders.

Aligning the future

According to the Executive Manager for Innovation and Development of CMM and co-Chair of the AccessNova Forum, Eduardo Vera, the main purpose of this meeting is to attract and share four intense days with our main international collaborators, strongly interacting with them to align frontier scientific research with the problems, challenges and new opportunities emerging in diverse productive sectors.

Vera indicates that mathematical modeling and ICT have increasing applications and great impact on Astronomy, Mining and Biomedicine, due to the large amount of data that these areas generate and require to process.

“Despite that these are very different areas, from a mathematical, technological and computational, they have very interesting similarities. All of them manage a massive amount of data, in the terabyte and petabyte range. The challenge is to analyze, extract valuable information and generat new knowledge from an ocean of data” explains the researcher.

Collaborative Projects

By the same token, the AccessNova Forum aims to consolidate the human collaboration network, generating the mutual knowledge and the trust required between researcher leading different disciplines, that allow the birth of new initiatives and projects.

To illustrate an example -Vera states- some algorithms from medical imaging are now being use for the first time in the reconstruction of astronomical  images: “This is the kind of synergies we are looking to achieve in this kind of interaction space”

One of the new lines of frontier research in computer sciences that attracted great interest in the Forum, was machine-to-machine (M2M) communication, which making use of the latest wireless technologies (4G) allows the emergence of new “social network” of machines.

The CMM Symposium 2012 – 7th AccessNova Forum was hosted in San Pedro de Atacama in collaboration with CONICT, ALMA, AURA, Fundación Chile, REUNA, IBM, Toyota, NTT, Codelco, Micomo y SK Godelius.
