National Institute of Education of Singapore and CMM sign a Memorandum of Understanding

  • The agreement was made within the framework of the "Memorandum of Understanding and Educational Interchange” signed by the Ministries of Education of Chile and Singapore. The agreement between the Singaporean institute and the Center will pursue joint research activities and/or workshops, including the area of mathematics education.

The Memorandum of Understanding was signed on the presence of members of the education group of the Center for Mathematical Modeling and Professor Wong Khoon Yoong, from the National Institute of Education (NIE) of Singapore.

In
Singapore, the agreement was signed by the Director of National Institute of Education Nanyang Technological University, Prof. Lee Sing Kong, while in Chile, was signed bt the director of CMM, Dr. Jaime San Martin on Monday 5.

"For us, this agreement has a special significance, not only is important for the Center, it is important for the Education in
Chile. Singapore is a reference worldwide, "explained Patricio Felmer, Associate researcher at CMM and professor of the Department of Mathematical Engineering.

Professor Wong, Head of the Mathematics Department and Mathematics Education Group of NIE, thanked to members of theCMM for possibility to know the activities carried out by the Center in mathematics education. "Some of the projects that you are involved are addressing the same problems that we face. We do not have all the answers and we are here to learn from you, "added Wong.

The co-operation between both institutions will pursue visits by and exchange of graduate and undergraduate students for study and research, visits by and interchange of staff for research, exchange of information and joint research activities and/or workshops, including the area of mathematics education.

CMM’ s researchers involved in education are working on the preparation of standards for the training of Elementary school teachers, that project is part of INICIA, an initiative of the Ministry of Education of Chile. Patricio Felmer said these standards will be evaluated by a team of Singaporean researchers from NIE, headed by Prof. Wong.

About the work done by the team of CMM, Wong Khoon Yoong said: "I am very impressed by what you have done, may be I will take some of your ideas."

The National Institute of Education of Singapore at NanyangTechnologicalUniversity is responsible for the training of all Singaporean school teachers, currently it has more than five thousand students and 391 academics. Meanwhile, the research team is composed of 123.
