Prof. Alejandro Maass wins UMALCA Prize 2009

  • The researcher was one of the three young Latin American mathematicians to receive this award.

DIM professor and CMM associate researcher, Alejandro Maass, was distinguish with the UMALCA Prize 2009, given by the Scientific Committee of the 3rd Latin American Congress of Mathematicians, which will be held in Chile from August 31 to September 4. The UMALCA Congress is the most important meeting of Mathematics in the region.

The prize was created in the year 2000 to distinguish mathematicians who work actively in Latin America and to stimulate and acknowledge their scientific contributions.

UMALCA Prize 2009 was also awarded to Carlos Gustavo Moreira (IMPA, Brazil) and Federico Rodriguez Hertz (Universidad de la Republica, Uruguay). The Scientific Committee also decided to award Special Mentions to Jorge Lauret (Universidad de Córdoba, Argentina) and  Fernando Codá Marques (IMPA, Brazil).

The prize includes the invitation to give a plenary lecture at the Congress, and a monetary incentive equivalent to US$2,500.

The decision about the UMALCA Prize 2009 was responsibility of the Scientific Committee of the Congress, which this time consists of: Alejandro Adem (Canada), Rafael Benguria (Chile), Luis Cafarelli (USA), Carlos Cabrelli (Argentina), Ivar Ekeland (Canada), Felmer Patricio (Chile), Etienne Ghys (France), José Antonio de la Peña (Mexico), José Seade (Mexico), Marcio G. Soares (Brazil), Marcelo Viana (Brazil), Gunther Uhlmann (USA) and Mario Wschebor (Uruguay).
