Book highlights four projects of CMM for
their relevance in the development of Chile

  • "70 Stories of Innovation and Science, a collection of outstanding initiatives in Chile between 2000 and 2008," is the name of this work developed by the Ministry of Economy, CONICYT and different research entities.

Through a book that describes 70 successful experiences in the past eight years, the Ministry of Economy seeks to enhance the work of scientists and entrepreneurs of our country. Three of the CMM highlighted initiatives belong to the "Industrial Applications", while the fourth is in the education area.

The projects presented in this book were chosen to be a keystone of innovation and development in Chile. The experiences described in its 151 pages are from diverse fields such as astronomy, seismic studies, medicine, land resources, dissemination of science, among others.

"Science and Society" is the name of the second part of the book that reviews the activities highlighted in the dissemination of science, education and contemporary society. It is in this section where the work done by researchers of CMM, Patricio Felmer y María Leonor Varas is described. Their project is about strengthening the training of mathematics teachers through two tools: the production of monographs and the use of the case studies methodology.

The third chapter is intended to resources in
Chile and industrial applications. The projects highlighted by its relationship with industry are 7 and three of them are developed in the CMM.

With the article entitled "Through mathematical systems it is studied the optimization of copper productivity " is aware of the work performed by the Laboratory of Bioinformatics and Mathematics of the Genome (LBMG) and BioSigma of CMM, which has focused on developing mathematical tools that allow analyze the behavior of biological interaction networks, including the bacteria that are present in the process of bioleaching of copper. The article also highlights the work of researchers from the Center to assist in the identification and isolation of three bacteria responsible for separate copper from mining wastes.

Another highlighted project for its outstanding contribution to industry is related to the outbursts of rock in underground mining. The extraction of minerals is run through underground explosions and although effective, represents a risk to employees and production. Aware of this situation, the El Teniente mine contacted CMM’s researchers to address this problem through mathematical modeling.

The third article describes two initiatives that seek to optimize the European underground transport and where CMM has participated as a single non European institution, responding to an invitation from ALSTOM. These projects are Modurban and IntegRail. The work of CMM researchers, led by Jorge Amaya, was aimed at making more efficient the use of energy in this type of transport. The end result was a software system that coordinates communication between cars and the central of monitoring and modeling the thermal balance inside the cars, tunnels and stations with special emphasis on moderate consumption of energy.

"70 Stories of Innovation and Science, a collection of outstanding initiatives in Chile between 2000 and 2008" was conducted by the Ministry of Economy with the collaboration of CONICYT, Millennium Science Initiative, Foundation for Agrarian Innovation (FIA) and Innova Chile.
