SUMMARY:SIPo “Mapping the Invisible: Mission Microbiomes CEODOS Chile Expedition”
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: \nThe Chilean coastal ocean is a highly productive eastern boundary system encompassing diverse oceanographic settings, including coastal upwelling areas, a pronounced oxygen minimum zone, submarine canyons, and Patagonia waters shaped by strong salinity gradients. This environmental heterogeneity makes it a natural laboratory to disentangle how such contrasting conditions shape microbial biogeography.\nIn this talk, we present data from Mission Microbiomes CEODOS Chile expedition, that includes 159 metagenomes and 157 metatranscriptomes collected along the Chilean coast at 32 stations between 18°S and 56°S, from surface to 600 m depth. We discuss how the environment shapes prokaryotic and giant virus communities and establish a biogeographic framework that can serve as a baseline for predicting how future changes in the oxygen minimum zone extent, sea surface temperature, salinity structure, and upwelling dynamics may reorganize microbial communities in this climate-sensitive coastal system\nSpeaker: Marianne Buscaglia (CMM, U. de Chile)\n
