DIM-CMM researchers win the “Charles Broyden Prize 2010”

The best of the year

The article “Interior proximal algorithm with variable metric for second-order cone programming: Applications to structural optimization and support vector machines,” published in 2010 by the renowned magazine, was ranked as the best publication of the year in the area. The decision to grant this distinction was held by a select committee composed of scientists Andrzej Ruszczynski, Frederic Bonnans, Masao Fukushima, Nick Sahinidis and Yinyu Ye.

“The news was unexpected, because it is a prize nobody runs for. Furthermore this reinforces the conviction that our department is doing high-level optimization,” said Prof. Hector Ramirez. “Since the conviction I have,” -he added-, on the fundamental role of optimization in the formation and work of an engineer, this award will also benefit the School and those who are here. “

The award will be announced at the SIAM Conference on Optimization, one of the most important of the discipline, to be held between May 16-19, in Darmstadt, Germany.

The paper

The article is one of three that makes up the doctoral thesis in Engineering Science, Major in Mathematical Modeling, of Julio López. “This is also a recognition of the level of achievement of our doctors and, of course, to Julio’s work during the execution of his thesis, said Professor Ramirez.

“The type of optimization problems addressed has a large number of applications. In fact, this article efficiently solve two engineering applications that are very different in origin, but with common characteristics in their mathematical formulation, the optimal design crosslinking type mechanical structures and classification of data subject to uncertainty via support vector machines, “concluded Dr. Ramirez.
