Aiming to be a contribution for the development and improvement of teacher traning, Center for Mathematical Modeling of Faculty of Physical and Mathematical Sciences lauched the Refip text collection in an event attended by Ministry of Education Nicolás Eyzaguirre and President of Universidad de Chile Víctor Pérez.
“As university, we are proud to see this work as a contribution to the country. We think education is not only responsibility of people in charge directly of this issue, but a responsibility of all the disciplines… and it couldn’t in better hands than academics’ from Faculty of Physical and Mathematical Sciences”, said Pérez.
Ceremony was in former National Congress and speackers remarked the role of University in Education improvement. “I can’t but thank to Universidad de Chile for putting the best people from Center of Mathematical Modeling to think about a very complex objective which is not only knowing about a discipline but knowing to teach it”, pointed out ministry Eyzaguirre, who added “as this huge work shows in its results, the country needs its best universities enhancing Faculties of Education in order to attract and train best teachers, linking itself with public schools and developing research on Education in the highest level. We have to share knowledge and intelligence to service all the society.”
In that way, Salomé Martínez, Education Lab director, affirmed that “work in Education, both in research and resources development, is very complex and it is an intellectual challenge. This is what moves to researcher to work from University. In universities, we can also carry out a long-term work which is a key on Education”.
Collection has four books, which address different areas in Math. Its content is aligned with ‘Standards for teachers initial training’ that Education professionals must accomplish in Inicia tests. Numbers, Algebra, Facts and Random and Geometry are the titles that Ediciones SM will sell in book stores along Chile. Its content is focused in mathematical knowledge for teaching, addressing issues such as mathematical reasoning and language, representations, problem solving, use of concrete material, analysis of activities for learning, etc. Every issue is developed in a gradual process of thought, analysis and exercising, where students ask themselves how to make questions and problems as well as to find solutions to new inquiries. The final objective is thinking about their future as teachers.
“The books caught many different experiences. They were conceived in tight collaboration with final users. For that reason, every book is an answer to users’ needs and we believe this experience will create a standard on the elaboration of scientific material in many fields beyond education” said project alternate director Héctor Ramírez.
The publications are the final result of a three-year work where a team of mathematicians and teachers created a series of resources focused on improving the preparation for Math teaching through improving the quality of teachers training. In fact, five thousand Education students tested pre-printed books from 16 universities.
“Our intention through this collection was to become explicit the complexity of Math in school. This is very important because it will have consequences in Faculties of Education that will have to strength its disciplinary lines to take over the demands of Mathematics teaching”, said Martínez.
Refip was funding by Fondo de Fomento al Desarrollo Científico y Tecnológico (Fondef) y was led by Center of Mathematical Modeling of Universidad de Chile that worked with Universidad Católica. It is also supported by Fundación Luksic, Ediciones SM, Ministerio de Educación and Academia Chilena de Ciencias.
