The Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters has decided to award the Abel Prize 2023 to Argentine mathematician Luis A. Caffarelli, an academician at the University of Texas at Austin, USA, for his seminal contributions to regularity theory for nonlinear partial differential equations including free-boundary problems and the Monge–Ampère equation.
Caffarelli thus becomes the first Latin American to receive this prestigious award, which was established in 2002 by the Norwegian government to fill the gap in the field of mathematics left by the Nobel Prizes.
For more information, see the Abel Prize laureate 202 profile, the official press release and the press article in the Spanish newspaper El País, where Caffarelli has made numerous scientific collaboration visits. The mathematician is currently a member of the scientific advisory board of the Instituto de Ciencias Matemáticas (ICMAT) in Madrid, and in the past was also a member of the international scientific committee of the Center for Mathematical Modeling (CMM) at the University of Chile.
