CMM awarded Fondef fund to develop system that predicts peaks in pediatric hospitalizations

The National Agency for Research and Development (ANID) announced that the Digital Health line of the Center for Mathematical Modeling (CMM) of the University of Chile was awarded a new Fund for the Promotion of Scientific and Technological Development (Fondef) IDeA I+D, this time to develop a computer system based on artificial intelligence to predict the peak of pediatric hospitalizations due to respiratory causes.

The purpose of the initiative is to provide the hospital health system with a computerized tool that facilitates decision making for bed management, anticipating the need for pediatric hospitalizations due to respiratory diseases, in a quantitative manner and with a strong scientific-technological basis.

“Among the most relevant features, this platform will use artificial intelligence for predictive processes and epidemiological concepts for reporting. It will be fed with local information provided by the participating hospitals, in addition to information from public health databases and potential predictors, such as climatic and other factors,” explained the director of the CMM, Héctor Ramírez, who directs the project and in which CMM researchers Gloria Henríquez and Víctor Riquelme also participate.

Héctor Ramírez Cabrera, director of the Center for Mathematical Modeling.

As explained by the coordinator of the CMM Digital Health area, the proposed solution consists of the design, development and implementation of a computer platform for predicting pediatric hospitalizations due to respiratory causes, which will consist of a system for predicting the demand for hospitalizations, in charge of predicting the date and magnitude of the peak of hospitalizations; and a system for reporting indicators of interest, which will provide the visualization of useful information for the management of hospitalizations and the availability of beds for respiratory diseases.
