Exploring Mathematics: Students from Colegio Manquecura Discover the Work of the CMM

Nearly 45 students from Colegio Manquecura visited the Faculty of Physical and Mathematical Sciences (FCFM) at the University of Chile, where they had the opportunity to learn about the research carried out by scientists and professionals from the Center for Mathematical Modeling (CMM) and discover how mathematics contributes to addressing today’s global challenges.al.

The day began with a tour of the faculty’s facilities, followed by a talk given by Flavio Guiñez, CMM’s Outreach Coordinator, who introduced the center’s main research areas and presented the timeline “From Mathematics to Artificial Intelligence”. The talk offered a journey from Blaise Pascal’s pioneering work in 1642 on the mechanical calculator to the cutting-edge developments currently being led by NLHPC, ALeRCE, and Copernicus LAC Chile laboratories.

The visit concluded in the CMM Library with an engaging session of “Mathematical Games and Challenges,” led by Flavio Guiñez.

Teachers who accompanied the students later shared their impressions through a survey, highlighting the experience as “very satisfactory,” describing the talk about university programs as “very informative,” the guidance provided by monitors as “excellent,” and the laboratory visits as “very interesting.”

This activity was organized in collaboration with the External Engagement Office of the FCFM and its School Outreach Unit, reaffirming CMM’s commitment to scientific dissemination and to bringing mathematics closer to new generations.
