With the aim of fostering dialogue on the challenges and opportunities that artificial intelligence presents for the logistics sector, the symposium “Logistics and Artificial Intelligence: Perspectives from Engineering” was held on October 3 at the Center for Mathematical Modeling (CMM) of the Faculty of Physical and Mathematical Sciences at the University of Chile. The event was organized by the Chilean Academy of Engineering.
The symposium took place in the John von Neumann Hall of the CMM and was moderated by Sergio Bitar, full member of the Chilean Academy of Engineering. The panel featured presentations by Mabel Leva, Director of Conecta Logística and Chair of EFE Central; Antonio Dourthe, General Coordinator of the Logistics Development Program at the Ministry of Transport and Telecommunications; Darío Poblete, founder of Seeknology Chile; and Rodrigo Garrido, academic and Director of the Interdisciplinary Center for Data Science at Universidad Diego Portales.
Throughout the session, the speakers discussed how artificial intelligence is reshaping logistics processes and data management, as well as the emerging challenges in sustainability, efficiency, and human capital development.
Sally Bendersky, President-elect of the Board of the Chilean Academy of Engineering, highlighted the purpose of this series of discussions: “The Academy’s goal is to strengthen society’s understanding of the work engineers do and to enhance their participation in all areas where these professionals are essential. This year, we launched a series of symposiums aimed at bringing together expert panels to revitalize the role of engineering in Chile”.
Mabel Leva emphasized the importance of cross-sector collaboration: “Creating spaces for conversation and reflection is extremely valuable—especially in a panel that brings together perspectives from the public, private, and academic spheres. The interaction among these three sectors is vital to strengthening a field as critical as logistics”.

Meanwhile, Rodrigo Garrido appreciated the diversity of perspectives explored: “We discussed topics ranging from national policy, technology, and algorithms to business perspectives. Some key takeaways included the importance of security in the logistics chain, and many new avenues for exploration emerged that we should continue to analyze over time”.
Events like this symposium represent a valuable opportunity to advance dialogue on the role of artificial intelligence in transforming key sectors for the country—particularly national logistics.
