The Center for Mathematical Modeling (CMM) of the Faculty of Physical and Mathematical Sciences at the University of Chile took part in the annual steering committee meeting of the 2025 STIC-AmSud, MATH-AmSud, and CLIMAT-AmSud Regional Programs an initiative led by French cooperation agencies together with their counterparts from Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, and Venezuela.
These programs aim to strengthen research, development, and scientific innovation networks by funding joint projects between teams in South America and France, fostering the exchange of knowledge, technologies, and highly skilled professionals.
The meeting, held on November 12 and 13 in Brasília, brought together representatives from national science agencies and regional institutions that support the program, with the goal of defining priority areas for collaboration and international cooperation in the coming years.
Prof. Héctor Ramírez, director of the CMM, participated on behalf of the center, reaffirming its commitment to international scientific cooperation and to reinforcing Chile’s role within high-impact research networks.
“Instances like this allow us to identify common challenges across the region, strengthen local capacities, and, above all, build knowledge collaboratively—one of the key strengths of both the CMM and the Chilean scientific ecosystem,” the director remarked.
The STIC-AmSud, MATH-AmSud, and CLIMAT-AmSud Regional Programs are joint initiatives between French cooperation agencies and their South American partners, designed to foster and expand scientific collaboration and the creation of research and development networks in strategic areas of knowledge.
The MATH-AmSud Regional Program brings together Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, and Venezuela, and focuses on mathematics. The STIC-AmSud Program, which involves the same countries, promotes cooperation in information and communication sciences and technologies. Meanwhile, the CLIMAT-AmSud Program—integrating Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Paraguay, Peru, and Uruguay—seeks to strengthen research on climate variability and climate change.
These programs fund two-year research projects that support the mobility of researchers, as well as graduate and doctoral students, and encourage the transfer of knowledge and technologies among participating institutions. Each project must include France and at least two South American countries, while also promoting gender balance within research teams and fostering the participation of young scientists to ensure the continuity and long-term projection of international collaboration networks.
Impact on the CMM Scientific Community
The CMM plays an active role within this network, enabling it to deepen its collaboration with universities and research centers across Latin America and Europe, expand opportunities for its researchers and students, and contribute to the advancement of mathematical knowledge with global impact.
“Our participation in AmSud reinforces the CMM’s commitment to collaborative, open, and regionally grounded science. Scientific cooperation lies at the core of this program and has been instrumental for the region’s scientific development. For the first time, this meeting explored how to take a further step—how this true seedbed that is AmSud can evolve into the consolidation of robust scientific networks,” emphasized Prof. Ramírez.
