- Principal investigator Dr. Alejandro Maass participated in the opening event of this highly attended conference organized by the Chilean Navy, while Dr. Eduardo Vera participated in a panel discussion on AI applications to address the urgent challenges the country faces.
Innovapolinav is an annual event organized by the Navy’s Center for Technological Innovation (CiTA) which, since 2018, has brought together various actors from the public and private dual innovation ecosystem. This year’s event took place on Thursday, October 23, and Friday, October 24.
This event aims to promote sustainable technological development and inter-institutional links, and in this context, the Center for Mathematical Modeling (CMM) of the University of Chile played a prominent role this year.
On this occasion, Innovapolinav featured keynote speeches, panel discussions, interactive workshops, and technology demonstrations, along with an exhibition with more than 70 stands and 56 national and international exhibitors, including our center.
The meeting kicked off with a panel discussion entitled ‘Accelerating scientific and technological entrepreneurship in the Valparaíso region’, in which Dr. Alejandro Maass, principal investigator at CMM and winner of the 2025 National Prize for Exact Sciences, spoke with María José Escobar, director of Community Relations at the Federico Santa María Technical University (USM).
Dr. Maass commented, “I presented the idea of the Bougainville Program developed by the Sorbonne University and the French Navy, a program in which we began to outline ideas to see the feasibility of developing something similar in Chile”.
“This talk”, the expert said, “stems from relationships with collaborators on TARA Ocean expeditions and possible directions we can develop together after the CEODOS Chile Microbes Mission expedition that I co-organized in Chile”.
Meanwhile, on the second day of the meeting, Dr. Eduardo Vera, CMM Outreach Coordinator, participated in the discussion “Innovating with Purpose: Artificial Intelligence for the Country’s Challenges,” sharing the stage with Rodrigo Salas, principal investigator at iHEALTH at the University of Valparaíso, and José Galaz, researcher at CIGIDEN and founder of the TsunamiLab platform, moderated by Carlos Ladrix, deputy director of Applied Research at ANID.
In this regard, Dr. Vera commented that “we discussed very relevant aspects of the challenges facing the country in light of the changes brought about by the widespread adoption of AI in virtually all areas of society”.
“In particular”, he elaborated, “I emphasized the need to build the capabilities required to adapt to the new scenarios that are opening up, through understanding and critical use of the formidable technological tools that are being developed at an accelerated pace: a major challenge for education at all levels”.
This meeting was funded by CORFO and the Valparaíso Regional Productive Development Committee and co-organized by Know Hub, ASIVA, and Pro Aconcagua.
