President of the Republic Michelle Bachelet named Rafael Correa, researcher at Center for Mathematical Modeling (CMM) and academic at Department of Mathematical Engineering (DIM) of Universidad de Chile, as rector of the new state university in O’Higgins Region.
The decision took place on Monday, September 7th. In the occasion, President also appointed Roxanna Pey, also from Universidad de Chile, as rector of the Aysen’s university.
In a press release, Juan Ramon Godoy Muñoz, mayor of O’Higgins Region, held that “the authority appointed by the President Michelle Bachelet in our region make us deeply happy because he is an academic with extensive experience who knows perfectly how to run a university.” He also noted that “Rafael Correa has full support of the regional government in his work.”
In the same document, the researcher said: “It is a great satisfaction to contribute to the development of higher education in Chile. It is the first public university to be created virtually from scratch. It is a huge responsibility and I hope not disappoint anyone.”
Universidad de Chile will tutor the new universities.

Rafael Correa is a mathematical civil engineer from Universidad de Chile. He holds a PhD in Engineering at Clermont University and a PhD in Mathematics at Blaise Pascal University. He was the first CMM director and, in addition to his academic experience as DIM academic, founded the Centro de Investigación Avanzada en Educación. He was also part of Comisión Ciencia para el Desarrollo de Chile, convened by President Bachelet to generate public policies for the scientific development of the country.
