Prof. Manuel del Pino presented a talk at ICM

On August 22 last, and before a large audience, the mathematician at the Mathematical Engineering Department (DIM) and Asociate Researcher at the Center of Mathematical Modeling (CMM) in the Universidad de Chile, Manuel del Pino, became the first scientist in the country affiliated to issue an invited talk at the International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM), four-yearly event where is delivery of the Fields medals, equivalent to the Nobel Prize of mathematics.
The 45-minute presentation made by Prof. del Pino, an expert on Partial Differential Equations, entitled “New Entire Some classical solutions to semilinear elliptic problems”, he emphasized the work done in recent years with the mathematical Michal Kowalczyk (FCFM – U. De Chile) and Juncheng Wei (Chinese University of Hong Kong). This work included “in his words-the most important find of his career, as is the construction of a counterexample to a conjecture famous Italian mathematician Ennio De Giorgi (1928-1996).
The event is the mathematical world for a special pomp and glamor, as it says Professor del Pino, as is usual in countries that are home to its highest authorities who inaugurated, as was the case with the premiere of India Pratibha Patil, or the kings of Spain in the previous version in 2006.
“Without a doubt is the highest recognition that a local mathematical received. Anywhere in the world, an occasion like this is good reason for celebration and pride, “said former director of the Department of Mathematical Engineering of the Faculty, Marcos Kiwi, when Professor del Pino received this invitation in November 2009. A view that today, the current Director of the DIM, Juan Davila: “Undoubtedly, the participation of one of our colleagues in the most important congress in mathematics gives us great satisfaction.”
For his part, Professor Pino said: “Being invited speaker at this conference is a great honor for me. I feel like a recognition of a work program that we developed several co-authors in recent years, “he said.

“It is indeed a great encouragement to continue, we believe that we are developing tools have great potential yet unexplored and hope especially to attract young researchers to these issues,” he said.

International Congress of Mathematicians

The ICM, which is held every four years, brought this 2010 more than 4000 mathematicians from all over the world in a large convention center in the city of Hyderabad in India, where in addition to the Fields Medal, the Nobel equivalent in area of mathematics, awarded to mathematicians under 40 years, presented the awards Nevalinna, Gauss and Chern. The presentations at this meeting were made by invitation to those mathematicians responsible for the most relevant contributions to the discipline over the past four years.

Manuel del Pino (48), Senior Lecturer at the University of Chile since 2002, the Mathematical Civil Engineer FCFM – U. de Chile, Ph D. University of Minnesota, with postdocs at the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton and the University of Chicago. His publications in scientific journals number over 100 and the ISI Essential Science Indicators, July 2010, places him in 63rd place in the list of most cited mathematicians articles published in journals by ISI for the past 10 years. In his scientific career, Prof. del Pino 1800 totals more than ISI citations in total, the highest figure for a mathematician in the country.
