CONICYT Authorities visit CMM

Thisactivity is part of a series of visits to the Scientific and TechnologicalCenters of Excellence made by members of the Investigación Asociativa Programof CONICYT. During the visit to CMM attended César Muñoz, Director of the InvestigaciónAsociativa Program, Jani Brouwer program Coordinator, the responsible for monitoring,Marcela Iglesias and Juan Luis Soto and María Eugenia Camelio, FONDAP Coordinator.

In theactivity, the delegation was received by Jaime San Martín, Director of theCenter, who presented the main achievements of CMM during the first year ofimplementation of Basal funding, among them, he highlighted those projects  focused to improve the learning of Mathematicsas the use of ITCs, the definition of standards and support materials for the trainingof Math teachers, which have been sponsored by the Ministry of Education, theChilean Academy Science and CONICYT through a Fondef project.

The mainobjective of the CMM is to become a center of excellence for world-classresearch and advanced training in applied mathematics, recognizedinternationally as a platform for the mathematical modeling.

During 2008the Center published 82 papers and ISI received over 80 visits. The team wasstrengthened with 25 highly trained engineers, researchers added to the 40Ph.D. candidates and 130 undergraduates. Last year, the CMM organized 6conferences, 10 workshops and 72 seminars (with an average of 3 per week).

At the endof the visit, the CONICYT delegation had a meeting with some member of CMM toaddress the challenges for next year.
