Students from Latin America congregate at UdeC around applied mathematics

From Monday, October 16 to Friday, October 20, the event was held to detail the various lines of research that the area’s graduate program is pursuing.

A few weeks ago, a new version of the Spring School (EP) of the PhD Program in Applied Sciences with a minor in Mathematical Engineering of the Universidad de Concepción (UdeC) was held.

This is an instance of promotion of this graduate program directed by Dr. Raimund Bürger, principal investigator of the Center for Mathematical Modeling (CMM) of the Universidad de Chile and subdirector of the Center for Research in Mathematical Engineering (CI²MA) of the UdeC, in whose facilities most of the activities of the PhD program are developed.

“The main objective of this school was the dissemination of the doctoral program. We addressed Chilean students and students from other Latin American countries, through activities involving professors of the program and graduates of the program“, detailed the also academic of the Department of Mathematical Engineering of the Faculty of Physical and Mathematical Sciences of the UdeC.

On this occasion, the EP included six lectures on various topics in the area, in addition to five courses on optimization problems, applications and finite element methods, sedimentation problems and discrete mathematics by academics from the Program, bringing together 22 attendees from different Latin American countries, such as Colombia, Costa Rica, Panama and Peru, one of whom is already applying to the program.

These instances were complemented by presentations by professors, students and former students of the program, and an introduction to the UdeC graduate system, the application process and scholarship options. “Relying on our experiences from similar schools in 2006 and 2010, in addition to specialized events on Numerical Analysis of Partial Differential Equations in 2014 and 2019, we have found that this type of event is the most efficient way to bring the PhD program to the attention of potential interested parties,” commented Dr. Bürger, also a researcher at UdeC’s FONDAP Center for Water Resources for Agriculture and Mining, CRHIAM, in this regard.

“To identify potential participants interested in participating in the event, we had the active support of our graduates living abroad. Participants arrived thanks to the support of our former students Bryan Gómez (Universidad de Costa Rica, West Campus), Yolanda Vásquez (Universidad Tecnológica de Panamá), Lihki Rubio and Carlos Vega (Universidad del Norte, Colombia), Ramiro Acevedo (Universidad del Cauca, Popayán, Colombia), in addition to contacts that our colleague Rommel Bustinza has with the Universidad Nacional de Ingeniería (UNI) in Lima, Peru,” he said.

“Finally, I would like to thank the support of MWC through the Basal project (ANID/FB210005) for financing the airfare and accommodation of the participants; in addition to the University of Concepción through the Postgraduate Department, the Faculty of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, the Department of Mathematical Engineering and CI²MA; and the ANID/Anillo ACT210030 project for supporting the event”, Bürger emphasized.

The activity was highly valued by the attendees, as is the case of Brayan Blanco Cordero, graduate student at the Universidad de Costa Rica, who commented that “the contents exposed, both in the lectures and in the courses were accurate. Perhaps due to the time available, some courses felt like congress presentations, but the objective of showing the participants the lines of research-work and the level expected when entering and leaving the doctorate was achieved”.

“As main results I highlight the approach to the reality of the students and researchers of a doctorate with so much international prestige, as well as the motivation that awakened in me to study this doctorate”, he added.
