International scientists highlight WONAPDE as the “world’s most relevant” congress in applied mathematics

Between January 15 and 19, the seventh workshop on “Numerical Analysis of Partial Differential Equations” (WONAPDE) 2024, organized by the Center for Research in Mathematical Engineering (CI²MA), with the support of the Center for Mathematical Modeling (CMM) of the University of Chile, will be held at the University of Concepción.

One of the keynote speakers at this edition will be Ivan Yotov, professor in the Department of Mathematics at the University of Pittsburgh in the United States. “My research interests focus on numerical analysis of partial differential equations and large-scale scientific computing, more specifically flow and transport in porous media, computational fluid dynamics and solid mechanics, with applications to geosciences and biomedicine of coupled flow and mechanics, such as coupled flows of free fluids and porous media, flow in deformable porous media, fluid-structure interaction and poroelastic fluid-structure interaction. My work encompasses the development and analysis of mathematical models, numerical methods, such as finite element and finite volume methods, and efficient solvers and preconditioners for the resulting algebraic systems,” he says.

“This will be my first time at WONAPDE. I have been interested in attending in the past, but was unable to attend due to overlapping teaching obligations. I am delighted to attend this time. WONAPDE is one of the most important conferences in the world in the area of numerical analysis of partial differential equations and scientific computing, and I am honored to have been invited to give a plenary talk,” emphasizes Prof. Yotov.

On the results he intends to obtain from his participation in WONAPDE 2024, he states that “the topics of the conference are very interesting to me and are closely related to my research. I am looking forward to attending the talks and learning about recent results on these topics. I am also excited to meet many of my friends and collaborators from CI²MA-UdeC and around the world.”

“In recent years I have been involved in numerous collaborations with colleagues at CI²MA-UdeC on mathematical and numerical modeling of fluid flows, flow in porous media and poroelastic fluid-structure interaction. Despite significant progress, many challenges still lie ahead. I look forward to several stimulating discussions on the state of the art in these topics and hope that they will lead to new joint projects,” he adds.

Simon Fraser University academic in Canada, Nilima Nigam, who will also be a plenary speaker at WONAPDE 2023, details that “I work on numerical analysis of partial differential equations (PDEs) and integral equations with special attention to structure preservation and spectral geometry. I am also interested in modeling and simulation in physiology and am working these days on understanding the mechanical properties of the muscle-tendon unit”.

In that vein, he notes that “the WONAPDE conference series is a very prestigious international conference on numerical analysis of PDE. It is attended by leading experts in the field and the talks describe the state of the art. I have participated in 2013 and 2016 and remember learning a lot during the conference. So, I was delighted to have the opportunity to participate in the 2024 one, when the organizers asked me to give a talk. I am honored to have been invited”.

“I am looking forward to meeting experts in numerical analysis from UdeC, from other universities in Chile and from the rest of the world. It is a fantastic opportunity to learn about the most important advances in this field. Especially since Covid has caused so much disruption, it will be good for all of us to meet in the wonderful environment of the Department of Mathematical Engineering at UdeC,” adds Prof. Nigam.

The organizers

This event is promoted by the numerical analysis group of the Center for Mathematical Modeling (CMM) of the University of Chile, all of them also academics from the universities of Concepción (UdeC), Bío-Bío (UBB) and Católica de la Santísima Concepción (UCSC) and members of the Center for Research in Mathematical Engineering, CI²MA, of the UdeC.

The principal investigator of the group and academic of the Department of Mathematical Engineering of the UdeC, Dr. Raimund Bürger, explains that “we are very pleased that a group of internationally recognized researchers has accepted our invitation. We are looking forward to having them here, especially considering that both have collaborated with our center and in particular have supported former and current undergraduate and graduate students”.

Meanwhile, the UBB academic, Dr. Ricardo Oyarzúa Vargas, points out that “the conference includes no less than 19 sessions on various topics, including sessions on highly applied topics such as modeling in biomedicine, water resources management, and sessions on new numerical methods to approximate solutions to PDEs (Partial Differential Equations). Several of these sessions are organized by renowned international researchers, and others by very active young researchers. We are very pleased with these contributions to our conference and hope that these sessions will generate a great impact on the scientific community.”
