Specialists in Numerical Analysis will meet in an international event at U. Católica del Maule
  • ‘Talca Numérica I’ will be held next July as part of a series of traditional scientific meetings imported from Spain by UdeC academics.

The scientific event ‘Talca Numérica – Tenth Meeting on Numerical Analysis of Partial Differential Equations‘ will be held at the San Miguel campus of the Universidad Católica del Maule (UCM) from Wednesday, July 2 to Friday, July 4.

The first nine events in the series have been held periodically in various cities across the country, following a model adapted from the experience of Spanish mathematician Francisco-Javier Sayas. This approach is explained by one of the series’ initiators, Gabriel N. Gatica, a professor at the Universidad de Concepción (UdeC) and a researcher at the Center for Mathematical Modeling (CMM) at the University of Chile.

“The Numerical Analysis event entitled ‘Zaragoza Numérica’, created by Francisco-Javier Sayas in 2003, brought together two activities of different character: short courses given by specialists and lectures by researchers and thesis students, with the goal of promoting research activities related to numerical analysis of problems governed by partial differential equations, including theoretical and practical aspects”.

During a visit of Javier during the second semester of 2004“, says the founder of the Center for Research in Mathematical Engineering, CI²MA, of the UdeC, ‘I told him that I was interested in ’plagiarizing’ the name of the event that he organized in Spain, to create something similar here in Chile, and he gladly agreed”. As a consequence, ‘Valparaíso Numérico I’ was “born”, at the Federico Santa María Technical University, co-organized by Gatica and Erwin Hernández, a former mathematical engineer from UdeC with a doctorate degree from the same university. “This first event took place on January 20, 2005, with eight exhibitors -one of them, precisely, Javier-.”

“The ‘Ciudad Numérica’ in Chile”, explains Gatica, ‘held later in Valparaíso again, and then in Santiago and La Serena. They ultimately developed into a three-day event which, unlike its counterpart in Zaragoza, excludes short courses and consists solely of a series of invited lectures.

New numerical city

The tenth meeting of the series will be hosted by the Department of Mathematics, Physics and Statistics of the UCM School of Basic Sciences. Dr. Yissedt Lara Díaz, academic of UCM, is part ot the organizing committee.

“This event was a tradition of nine consecutive occasions, gathering together the community of numerical analysis of partial differential equations, including both, experts and beginners. However, since 2020, due to the pandemic, it was interrupted and now, after almost five years, it is finally back. Our goal is to recover this tradition, expanding and strengthening the community”, commented the UdeC former PhD student.

.

“Thanks to the support of our sponsors,” Lara detailed, ”the event will have the participation of six plenary speakers, in addition to the participation of national and international researchers and graduate students. This will allow for dissemination and academic exchange for participants, without registration fees and with the possibility of scholarships for students”.

On this occasion, the event is also sponsored by the University of Santiago de Chile (USACH) and the Pontificia U. Católica de Chile (PUC), whose academics Patrick Vega (USACH) and Nicolás Barnafi (CMM and PUC) are part of the Organizing Committee.

From the UdeC, Manuel Solano Palma, also a member of the organization, commented that “at present, the most prestigious conference on Numerical Analysis of Partial Differential Equations (NDA-PDEs) in the world is the WONAPDE, which we always organize at the Universidad de Concepción every three years. With the aim of making the most recent advances in PDEs known to different cities in the country, the international conference ‘Numerical City’ is organized from time to time. It consists of six plenary international speaker talks and several exhibitor talks”.

So far, several versions of ‘Santiago Numérico’, ‘Valparaíso Numérico’ and ‘La Serena Numérica’ have been organized,” Solano explained and added that ‘this time, given that two former students of our PhD program in Applied Sciences with mention in Mathematical Engineering at UdeC (Yissedt Lara and Víctor Osores) are hired at UCM, we decided to organize this conference it in Talca and we had a great reception from the authorities of UCM’.

In this sense, Yissedt Lara emphasized that “hosting this event represents a great challenge and, at the same time, a unique opportunity to actively integrate ourselves into this scientific community. We seek to position UCM and our doctoral students in this area of research, taking advantage of the openness and accessibility of the meeting to strengthen our networks and expand our lines of academic interest”.

Finally, the academic highlighted that ‘Talca Numerical I’ “will be held in the new building of the Faculty, whose official inauguration is scheduled for March 28. We’re deeply excited to open the doors of our new home to the community and to start this new journey with an event of remarkable academic distinction..

The realization of this event is possible thanks to the support of the universities UCM, USACH, UdeC, PUC, and the research centers CMM of the U. de Chile and CI²MA of the UdeC.
