CMM presents the latest developments on probability and dynamic systems

The School on Information and Randomness, organized by the Center of Mathematical Modeling (CMM) of Universidad de Chile, closed last 12th December 2014 after four intense days of courses and conferences given by experts who showed the most recent innovations on the area.

“The knowledge acquired in the school will have a great impact for the participants, as there they could get in contact with the best researchers at the present in the probability and dynamic systems”, explained Jaime San Martín, CMM researcher. Along with Servet Martínez and Alejandro Maass, also members of the Center, he organized the event.

Among the lecturers invited were Martin Barlow, from the University of British Columbia, whose course was entitled The 2D uniform spanning tree; Jean François Quint, professor at Université de Bordeaux I, who lectured An introduction to random walks on groups; and David Nualart, from the University of Kansas, with the Malliavin calculus and normal approximations course.

The program also counted with the presence of 17 researchers who explained the studies they are carrying out. One of them was Daniel Remenik, from the Department of Mathematical Engineering (DIM) of the Faculty of Physical and Mathematical Sciences (FCFM) from Universidad de Chile, who talked about Exact formulas for random growth off a flat interface.

This School, which has been held since 2000, covers several topics like ergodic theory, heat kernel and potential theory, Lévy processes, coalescent and fragmentation theory, stochastic differential equations, percolation theory, finance, probabilistic algorithms and particle systems.

“The course given by David Nualart was the main reason that made me to participate in the school, as I have always been interested in what he does. It was the first time I listened him in person. I found the other conferences, even if they were not my area of research, of extraordinary level”, pointed out Joana Garzon, lecturer at the Universidad Nacional de Colombia.

Joana was part of the group of 70 researchers and postgraduate students coming from ten different countries. They landed on 9th December in Puerto Varas, a southern city of Chile that embraced the event this year.

“The venue had relevant advantages like excellent environmental conditions, which lead to share time together and to talk calmly about issues that go beyond the science. We used to discuss about the situation of the university or politics in each one of our countries”, highlighted San Martín.
