This is the first time that the Chilean Institute of Engineers awards this distinction to a woman.
For 40 years the Chilean Institute of Engineers has been giving the award to the Engineer for Distinguished Actions and this year is the first time it has been awarded to a woman. Salomé Martínez, an academic from the Department of Mathematical Engineering of the Faculty of Physical and Mathematical Sciences (FCFM) of the University of Chile and researcher at the Center for Mathematical Modeling (CMM), was distinguished in this category for her relevant career focused on improving the learning and teaching of mathematics in public education and her contributions to the recovery of post-pandemic learning, generating resources and strategies to enhance the teaching of mathematics at the school level.
“The fact that the Institute of Engineers has recognized my work in education is very important. It allows to expand the value of engineering for the lives of people and society, and on the other hand, it values educational design. It is also a great privilege to be the first woman to receive this award,” says the head of the CMM Education Laboratory.
His extensive and recognized work has been carried out addressing educational issues from an interdisciplinary perspective and forming teams and working models in which science and technology play a fundamental role. This approach, inherent in complex problem solving, has been central to the success of his work at the Center for Mathematical Modeling Education Laboratory (CMM-Edu).
“We have been privileged to contribute to public education over the years. The contributions in teaching resources and training that were recognized in the award is for long-standing work that we have done at CMM. It is the result of hard work, effort and perseverance, which allowed us to build a very powerful team, with leadership, and with the ability to take on great challenges in short periods of time”, adds the academic.
One of the many relevant projects carried out in the laboratory was Suma y Sigue, which won the UNESCO-Hamdan bin Rashid Al-Maktoum Award for Outstanding Practice and Performance in Improving Teacher Effectiveness 2017-2018.
The Award to the Engineer for Distinguished Actions is given to those who have stood out for having developed distinguished actions, in the public or private field, during the three years prior to those of its award, considering those actions that exceed the normal and efficient performance of the engineer’s usual work and that result in a clear benefit to the country, society, the profession or the Institute.
Center for Mathematical Modeling
The CMM is today the most active scientific research institution in mathematical modeling in Latin America. It is a center of excellence of the National Agency for Research and Development (ANID) of Chile, integrated by eight partner universities and located at the Faculty of Physical and Mathematical Sciences of the University of Chile. It is also the International Research Laboratory (IRL) #2807 of the French National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS).
Its mission is to create mathematics in response to problems in other sciences, industry and public policy. It seeks to develop science with the highest standards, excellence and rigor in areas such as data science, climate and biodiversity, education, resource management, mining and digital health.
