Dr. Jessika Camaño was one of the 32 academics highlighted in an official act of the UCSC.
This Tuesday 26th, as part of the activities for the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, authorities of the Universidad Católica de la Santísima Concepción (UCSC), paid tribute to 32 of its academics who have contributed to the fields of research, development and innovation (R+D+i), contributing significantly to the advancement of knowledge.
For this purpose, the hall of recognition ‘Women Drivers of Science and Knowledge at UCSC’ was inaugurated, which is located outside its Central Library and highlights their valuable contribution in their respective areas. One of the honorees is Dr. Jessika Camaño Valenzuela, an academic from the Department of Applied Physics and Mathematics of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Chile and researcher at the Center for Mathematical Modeling (CMM) of the University of Chile.
“When they contacted me to inform me about this initiative and propose me as a possible participant, I was filled with joy and gratitude to know that I could be part of it,” commented Dr. Camaño, also a researcher at the Center for Research in Mathematical Engineering (CI²MA) and the DSALT Gropu Project – Computational Mathematics for Desalination Problems (ACT210087).
“This achievement is undoubtedly the result of the constant and collaborative effort with researchers from both national and international institutions, for which I would also like to acknowledge and thank them for their valuable contribution,” she added.
“Undoubtedly, women continue to be a minority in STEM areas. Therefore, making visible those who develop outstanding research in these fields seems to me an excellent initiative,” said Dr. Camaño.
“This type of action demonstrates that STEM areas are open to both men and women, and at the same time, inspires other women to consider these disciplines as viable options,” the scientist deepened. “Seeing that they can develop successfully in them, without obstacles, contributes to breaking down the gender barriers that still persist, but which, fortunately, have been weakened over time.”
At the opening ceremony, UCSC’s Director of Gender, Dr. Carolina Aparicio commented that “we want to strengthen our role in society and generate knowledge that helps to eradicate violence, we need to understand in our context how to include the gender perspective in research as well as in teaching”.
And the Director of Research, Dr. María Graciela Badilla, stated that “making the work of the University’s female academics and research with a gender perspective visible is essential to advance towards a more equitable and diverse academic community.”
