Colombian mathematician recently joined in a postdoctoral position to collaborate in the Digital Health line at CMM.
At the beginning of the month, Jhoan Sebastián Báez began his duties as a postdoctoral researcher of the Digital Health line at the Center for Mathematical Modeling (CMM) of the University of Chile.
This in the context of the project ‘Computer system based on artificial intelligence to predict peak pediatric hospitalizations for respiratory causes‘ (Fondef ID23I10423) in collaboration with the coordinator of the line and director of the CMM, Héctor Ramírez, and the researcher Gloria Henríquez.
This project aims to develop predictive models to anticipate these increases and improve hospital planning. “My role within the project focuses on the scientific production involved in its execution,” says Jhoan, who is a mathematician from the Industrial University of Santander (Colombia) and holds a PhD from the State University of Campinas (Brazil), where, he explains, ”my area of concentration was Lie theory. Subsequently, my line of research was oriented towards the application of this theory to machine learning”.
“During the last few years,” he explains, ”I have combined theory and application in my research. In this sense, the National Open and Distance University (UNAD) of Colombia, where I worked as a teacher, financed my training in the master’s degree in Visual Analytics and Big Data at the University of La Rioja, with the purpose of contributing to the creation of the master’s degree in Data Science at that institution”.
His current research interests are related to “the implementation of epidemiological models, particularly in the development and improvement of SIR (Susceptible, Infected and Recovered) models”, he explains, “which play a key role in this project. My contribution will be oriented to the design of new predictive algorithms and the development of reporting tools for the prediction system”.
