Postdoctoral Position 2025 at Laboratory Mathomics CMM – CLOSED

The Center for Mathematical Modeling (CMM) of the University of Chile invites applications for one postdoctoral position in Viral Systems Biology of the Ocean. CMM is one of the leading mathematical research institutions in Latin America, developing both theoretical and applied lines of research. For more information on the center see: https://www.cmm.uchile.cl.

Ideal candidates should show outstanding potential and have interests aligned with the Systems Biology line of research at CMM. In particular, candidates active in or willing to work on the following topics are encouraged to apply:

  1. Modeling virus-host interactions in marine microbial networks.
  2. Integrative omics for viral community profiling.
  3. Viral influence on biogeochemical cycling and the biological carbon pump.
  4. Evolutionary and adaptive mechanisms in marine viral populations.

Additionally, candidates should possess the following skills:

  1. Solid scientific experience in marine viral ecology, mainly related to viruses that infect microbial eukaryotes and prokaryotes.
  2. Experience in analyzing metagenomic, metaviromic, and metatranscriptomic data, as well as demonstrable knowledge of bioinformatics applied to the use of programming languages (Python and R).
  3. Extensive experience in fieldwork for marine sampling of microbial and specifically viral communities, including extreme areas.
  4. Publications related to the study of marine viral communities, ideally related to the Chilean marine ecosystem and/or extreme ecosystems.
  5. In-depth knowledge of marine food web dynamics and biogeochemical fluxes.
  6. Systems-level approaches to understand virus-host interactions in marine ecosystems.
  7. Cognitive and communication skills in English, both written (demonstrable in scientific publications) and oral (demonstrable in presentations at international conferences).

The position is available for individuals who have obtained a PhD by the date of the appointment or are within the first three years after obtaining their PhD (with exceptions for maternity leave and other special circumstances).

The duration of the position is one year, renewable for up to two additional years after evaluation. The starting date is flexible, but preferably no later than September 1, 2025. The position is in a research capacity and does not carry teaching responsibilities (although teaching opportunities may be available), and is held at the CMM’s base at the University of Chile, located in Santiago. The gross monthly salary is $2,000,000 CLP. Basic support for research activity is provided, including travel expenses. Additionally, selected candidates can apply for government funding programs that offer further support, including travel grants and extensions of the postdoctoral period for up to two additional years.

Applicants should submit a curriculum vitae (including a list of publications) and a research statement using the online form below.

Applicants should also arrange for at least two letters of recommendation to be sent directly to postdocscmm@cmm.uchile.cl with the subject “Postdoctoral Position 2025 at Mathomics – Letter of recommendation”. Applications need to be submitted by June 30, 2025.

Inquiries about the position can be sent to postdocscmm@cmm.uchile.cl with the subject “Inquiry about Postdoctoral Position 2025 at Mathomics”.

CMM is committed to fostering diversity at all levels. Applications from women and other STEM minority candidates are strongly encouraged. The center has a gender and diversity committee educating and training its members, promotes diversity in all its teams, and is dedicated to improving the work-life balance of its members, including access to parental leave.
