The Center for Mathematical Modeling (CMM) and the Department of Mathematical Engineering (DIM) of the Faculty of Physical and Mathematical Sciences at the University of Chile received a visit from the Computer Science Laboratory of Sorbonne University (LIP6), one of the most prestigious computer science research centers in Europe. The meeting, held at the CMM facilities, aimed to strengthen scientific and academic cooperation and explore new opportunities for collaboration in artificial intelligence, data science, and computational theory.
The event was led by Prof. Alejandro Maass, Director of International Relations at CMM; José Soto, Director of DIM at the University of Chile; Iván Rapaport, Coordinator of the Networks research area at CMM; and Joaquín Fontbona, Coordinator of the Data Science research area at the Center. Representing LIP6 were Fabrice Kordon, Director of the Computer Science Laboratory at Sorbonne University; and researchers Olivier Fourmaux and Vanda Luengo.
During the meeting, the LIP6 team presented its main lines of research focused on artificial intelligence and data science; architecture, systems and networks; security and reliability; and computational theory and mathematics. They also highlighted opportunities for cooperation in doctoral training and academic mobility with our institution.
For their part, CMM and DIM shared their basic and applied research areas, emphasizing interdisciplinary work in national and international projects, as well as new opportunities for collaboration in advanced teaching and technology transfer.
“These spaces for conversation allow us to explore new opportunities for collaboration and training in areas where CMM has maintained a scientific interest for decades and where scientific complementarities enable us to address problems of great current relevance,” said Prof. Alejandro Maass, Director of International Relations at CMM.
Meanwhile, DIM Director José Soto noted that “the LIP6 visit represents a valuable opportunity to strengthen international cooperation in a coordinated manner between DIM and CMM, and to boost collaboration and knowledge exchange in areas where mathematics and computer science meet, such as artificial intelligence and data science”.
LIP6 is a joint research unit of Sorbonne University (SU) and the French National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS). Its scientific output averages 300 publications per year and has generated over 30 patents, 80 software innovations, and the creation of startups such as Welinq and Green Communications. Each year, approximately 40 doctoral theses are defended, reflecting its strong commitment to training outstanding researchers.
LIP6 maintains partnerships with universities in Brazil, the United States, Japan, China, and various European countries, as well as collaborations with industrial partners such as Thales, Airbus, Gandi, EDF, Sony and Toyota. Locally, it actively participates in three major initiatives at Sorbonne University: SCAI (Sorbonne Center for Artificial Intelligence), QICS (Sorbonne Quantum Information Center) and IUIS (University Institute of Health Engineering).
In his presentation, Fabrice Kordon emphasized that “the purpose of the visit is to strengthen international cooperation with South America and to promote student mobility between both countries,” highlighting LIP6’s interest in establishing lasting ties with the Chilean scientific ecosystem.
This visit seeks to highlight the collaboration between both centers in strategic areas such as artificial intelligence, data science and advanced computing, which are fundamental for the country’s scientific and technological development.
