Prof. Manuel Solano completed a residency at a prestigious Swedish center
  • The UdeC academic and researcher at the CMM of the University of Chile visited the Mittag-Leffler Institute of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences at the end of last year.

Between November and December last year, Prof. Manuel Solano Palma extended his research stay at the prestigious, century-old Mittag-Leffler Institute of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in Stockholm, as part of his current academic sabbatical.

Dr. Solano is a researcher at the Mathematical Modeling Center at the University of Chile, as well as a full professor in the Department of Mathematical Engineering at the Faculty of Physical and Mathematical Sciences at the University of Concepción (UdeC).

“Every semester” explains Dr. Solano, who is also a member of the Center for Research in Mathematical Engineering (CI²MA), “the institute offers thematic programs that bring together researchers from around the world to discuss a specific topic”.

Collaborative networks

“During the second half of 2025”, the scientist elaborated, “the program ‘Interfaces and Unfitted Discretization Methods’ was developed, organized by Anna-Karin Tornberg and Sara Zahedi from the KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden, Per-Gunnar Martinsson from the University of Texas at Austin, and Alfio Quarteroni from the Politecnico di Milano and EPFL Lausanne”.

The two-week program brought together researchers specializing in problems related to interfaces or internal boundaries and unfitted discretizations of partial differential equations (PDEs) from different applications, in a broad sense, including a wide variety of different numerical methods to identify and investigate common challenges and the benefits of exchanging ideas.

Due to the direct thematic relationship of this program with his own research interests, he was invited to participate by Sara Zahedi, whom he met in 2023 at the Enumath conference in Lisbon. She was then one of the plenary speakers at the Seventh Chilean Workshop on Numerical Analysis of Partial Differential Equations, WONAPDE, held in Concepción in January 2024.

“This invitation was an honor for me, as Sara is a highly renowned researcher in the field of unfitted methods. I spent a month at the institute and had the opportunity to participate in various workshops and work with some of my collaborators, who also visited the institute”, he explained.

“I had the opportunity to meet with my collaborator Tonatiuh-Sánchez Vizuet from the University of Arizona”, she explained, “whom I visited during August and September, and with Jaime Manríquez, a former student of mine in the Mathematical Civil Engineering program who is currently pursuing a doctorate at Lund University in southern Sweden”.

“I have kept active collaboration with both of them. During this visit, we began to develop projects that we hope to complete in the coming months”, he said.

Inspiring environment

“I think this has been one of the stays I’ve enjoyed the most,” he said. “In addition to the quality of the talks and workshops, the place itself is very inspiring. The main building of the institute was the home of Gösta Mittag-Leffler, preserved in excellent condition. We were free to use various rooms”.

“In the library,” he explained, “there were letters, manuscripts, and notes, written in the handwriting of various mathematicians and physicists of the time. In addition, there was a family atmosphere, as there are residences for visitors within the institute grounds where we stayed”.

In addition to the sabbatical semester granted by the UdeC, this stay was made possible thanks to funding from the CMM’s ANID Basal FB210005 and Fondecyt Regular 1240183 projects, as well as funds from the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. “I would like to thank the organization, especially Sara and Anna-Karin for their hospitality,” concluded the CMM researcher.
