The search of finite-time singularity solutions of the Euler equations for incompressible and inviscid fluids.

Event Date: Jun 28, 2022 in Differential Equations, Seminars

Abstract: Despite 250 years of history, the nature of solutions of the Euler equations remains an open problem. To date, it is not known if general smooth initial conditions of the Euler equations with finite energy do or do not blow-up in finite time. I will review the approach initiated by Leray of self-similar blow-up solutions. Lastly, I will show that under some conditions an axisymmetric incompressible and inviscid flow presents a finite-time singularity. This singularity appears to be generic and robust for a wide number of finite...

Event Date: Jun 22, 2022 in Differential Equations, Seminars

The speed of invasion on an advancing population.

Event Date: Jun 15, 2022 in Seminario de Probabilidades de Chile, Seminars

Abstract:  We derive rigorous estimates on the speed of invasion of an advantageous trait in a spatially advancing population in the context of a system of one-dimensional coupled F-KPP equations. The model was introduced and studied heuristically and numerically in a paper by Venegas-Ortiz et al. In that paper, it was noted that the speed of invasion by the mutant trait is faster faster when the resident population ist expanding in space compared to the speed when the resident population is already present everywhere. We use probabilistic...

Event Date: Jun 14, 2022 in Education, Seminars

Bianchi cosmologies with massless Vlasov matter.

Event Date: Jun 14, 2022 in Differential Equations, Seminars

Abstract: In this talk, I will give a short introduction to “mathematical cosmology” with a focus on the application of the kinetic theory in cosmology. As such, I will talk about Bianchi cosmologies, i.e., spatially homogeneous spacetimes that are governed by the Einstein equations which are coupled to massless collisionless (Vlasov) matter. Then, I will discuss their future attractors and show future stability of such models within Bianchi types I, II, and V symmetry class. The proof turns out to be more challenging compared to...

Event Date: Jun 13, 2022 in Dynamical Systems, Seminars

Integrability and the singular manifold method: a toolkit to determine soliton solutions.

Event Date: Jun 07, 2022 in Differential Equations, Seminars

Abstract: The Painlevé Property has proved to be a fruitful tool when it comes to identifying the integrability of nonlinear PDEs. The combination of this technique with the so-called singular manifold method offers an ideal framework to approach nonlinear integrable systems: it provides a systematic methodology to obtain the associated spectral problem, as well as a recursive procedure to determine soliton-like solutions. In this talk, we review the main characteristics of this setting, with applications on several examples related to...

Dominios Errantes Oscilantes en C_p

Event Date: Jun 06, 2022 in Dynamical Systems, Seminars

Constant Rank Conditions for Second-Order Cone and Semidefinite Programming.

Event Date: Jun 01, 2022 in Optimization and Equilibrium, Seminars

Abstract: In the context of the COVID-19, the development of methods to trace the spread of the virus is of vital importance. One of such methods relies on PCR testing of wastewater samples to locate sudden the appearance of infection. Given a representation of the wastewater network as a directed graph, we aim for a strategy that finds a new infected node using the worst-case minimum number of tests. This problem proves to be challenging on networks with uncertainty, as is the case of real-world data. We will explore the connection with...

Searching infected nodes in uncertain graphs.
