El Conocimiento Profesional de los Docentes de Matemática – su Estructura y Desarrollo

Event Date: May 12, 2015 in Education, Seminars

Spectral stability for the partition function and the number of biased independent sets.

Event Date: May 06, 2015 in Discrete Mathematics, Seminars

Abstract: In this talk we shall discuss two problems concerning the number of independent sets in regular graphs. The results of Kahn and Zhao show that among all d-regular graphs on n vertices, the graph consisting of disjoint copies of complete bipartite graphs maximizes the number of independent sets. In the first part we discuss a spectral stability phenomenon for this result. Further, we are interested in counting “biased” independent sets in regular bipartite graphs, i.e. independent sets which are essentially contained in one of the...

About Moreau-Yosida regularization of the minimal time crisis problem.

Event Date: May 06, 2015 in Optimization and Equilibrium, Seminars

Resumen: We  study an optimal control problem where the cost functional to be minimized represents the so-called time of crisis, i.e. the time spent by a trajectory solution of a control system outside a given set K. This functional can be expressed using the indicator of K, that is discontinuous preventing the use of the standard Maximum Principle. We consider a regularization scheme of the problem based on the Moreau-Yosida approximation of the characteristic function of K. We prove the convergence of an optimal sequence for the...

A CHARACTERIZATION OF THE RADON-NIKODYM PROPERTY. APPLICATION TO THE CONSTRUCTION OF ALMOST CLASSICAL SOLUTIONS OF HAMILTON-JACOBI EQUATIONS.

Event Date: Apr 29, 2015 in Optimization and Equilibrium, Seminars

Resumen: We prove that a Banach space X has the Radon-Nikodym property if and only if a certain perturbed minimization principle holds. We apply this result to the construction of everywhere differentiable functions which are solution almost everywhere of some Hamilton-Jacobi equation.

Event Date: Apr 21, 2015 in Dynamical Systems, Seminars

Lines, betweenness and metric spaces

Event Date: Apr 17, 2015 in Discrete Mathematics, Seminars

Abstract:   A celebrated Theorem of de Bruijn and Erdos states that every noncollinear set of n points in the plane determines at least n distinct lines. Line uv in the plane consists of all points p such that:   – dist(p,u) + dist(u,v) = dist(p,v) (i.e. u is between p and v) or – dist(u,p) + dist(p,v) = dist(u,v) (i.e. p is between u and v) or – dist(u,v) + dist(v,p) = dist(u p) (i.e. v is between u and p).   With this definition of line uv in an arbitrary metric space (V, dist), Chen and Chvatal...

Medicina & Modelación Matemática

Event Date: Apr 10, 2015 in Seminars

Event Date: Apr 08, 2015 in Education, Seminars

Mathematica for Teaching and Education

Event Date: Mar 25, 2015 in Optimization and Equilibrium, Seminars

Abstract:     Learn how to improve your classroom experience with Mathematica. This course gives a tour of functionality relevant to teaching and learning, along with case studies and best-practice suggestions for course integration. Topics include making your classroom dynamic with interactive models and a survey of computation and visualization capabilities useful for teaching practically any subject at any level.

Deep factorization of the stable process

Event Date: Mar 13, 2015 in Seminars, Stochastic Modeling

Abstract:  The Lamperti–Kiu transformation for real-valued self-similar Markov processes (rssMp) states that, associated to each rssMp via a space-time transformation, is a Markov additive process (MAP). In the case that the rssMp is taken to be an α-stable process with α ∈ (0,2), the characteristics of the matrix exponent of the semi-group of the embedded MAP (the Lamperti-stable MAP) are computed. Specifically, the matrix exponent of the Lamperti-stable MAP’s transition semi-group can be written in a compact form using only gamma...
