Characterizing the calmness property in convex semi-infinite optimization. Modulus estimates

Event Date: Jun 03, 2020 in Optimization and Equilibrium, Seminars

Abstract: We present an overview of the main results on calmness in convex semi-infinite optimization. The first part addresses the calmness of the feasible set and the optimal set mappings for the linear semi-infinite optimization problem in the setting of canonical perturbations, and also in the framework of full perturbations. While there exists a clear proportionality between the calmness moduli of the feasible set mappings in both contexts, the analysis of the relationship between the calmness moduli of the argmin mappings is much more...

Suspension flows over countable Markov shifts.

Event Date: Jun 02, 2020 in Dynamical Systems, Seminars

ABSTRACT: Markov shifts have been systematically used to model discrete time dynamical systems with certain hyperbolicity. In the same spirit suspension flows over Markov shifts model some continuous time systems (e.g. uniformly hyperbolic flows on compact manifolds), where the flow has a transverse section with specified return time. In this talk I will discuss the entropy theory of the suspension flow over a countable Markov shift (a Markov shift with countable alphabet). I will focus on the entropy at infinity of the flow (a natural...

Coupling and mixing local and nonlocal equations

Event Date: May 26, 2020 in Differential Equations, Seminars

Abstract: In this talk we present a simple way of coupling a local and a nonlocal evolution equation in such a way that the usual properties (like existence and uniqueness of solutions, conservation of the total mass, etc) are satisfied. Moreover, we study the limit as we homogenize this setting mixing the regions in which local and nonlocal operators act.

Predictive sets

Event Date: May 11, 2020 in Dynamical Systems, Seminars

ABSTRACT:  A subset of the integers P is called predictive if for all zero-entropy processes X_i; i in Z, X_0 can be determined by X_i; i in P. The classical formula for entropy shows that the set of natural numbers forms a predictive set. In joint work with Benjamin Weiss, we will explore some necessary and some sufficient conditions for a set to be predictive. These sets are related to Riesz sets (as defined by Y. Meyer) which arise in the study of singular measures. This and several questions will be discussed during the talk. No previous...
