Functional inequalities, flows, symmetry and spectral estimates

Event Date: Dec 07, 2018 in CMM Modeling, Seminars

ABSTRACT:   In this talk I will review recent result about how the use of linear and nonlinear flows has been key to prove functional inequalities and qualitative properties for their extremal functions. I will also explain how from these inequalities and their best constants, optimal spectral estimates can be obtained for Schrödinger operators. This is a topic which is at the crossroads of nonlinear analysis and probability, with implications in differential geometry and potential applications in modelling in physics and...

New algorithmic ideas for the “de novo” assembly of human populations

Event Date: Dec 05, 2018 in CMM-Bio, Seminars

Abstract: Decoding the genome of the entire human population is currently regarded as a feasible task due to the accelerated development of sequencing technologies. Two major approaches have been proposed to decode the genomic sequence of human individuals namely resequencing and de novo assembly. Currently, resequencing is the dominant approach and consists in sequencing genomic fragments (reads) and compares them to the human reference sequence. Contrary to the resequencing idea, the de novo assembly approach compute overlaps among the...

On Kac’s model, ideal Thermostats, and finite Reservoirs

Event Date: Dec 03, 2018 in CAPDE, Núcleo Modelos Estocásticos de Sistemas Complejos y Desordenados, Seminars

Abstract:   In 1956, Mark Kac introduced a stochastic model to derive a Boltzmann-like equation. Like the space-homogeneous Boltzmann’s  equation, Kac’s equation is ergodic with centered Gaussians as the  unique equilibrium state. In this talk, I will introduce Kac’s model, the thermostat used in [1] to guarantee exponentially fast convergence to equilibrium, and sketch the result in [2] how this infinite  thermostat can be approximated by a finite but large reservoir. Computing the entropy of multidimensional subshifts of finite type

Event Date: Nov 29, 2018 in Dynamical Systems, Seminars

ABSTRACT : Multidimensional subshifts of finite type are discrete dynamical systems as a set of colorings of an infinite regular grid with elements of a finite set A together with the shift action. The set of colorings is defined by forbidding a finite set of patterns all over the grid (also called local rules). The most simple and most considered grids of this type are Z2 and more generally Zd for d = 1. In this case, one can consider a coloring as a bi-dimensional and infinite word on the alphabet A. They are notably involved in statistical...

La reflexión docente ante el desempeño de los estudiantes en la evaluación de sus aprendizajes matemáticos

Event Date: Nov 28, 2018 in Education, Seminars

Prophet Secretary Through Blind Strategies

Event Date: Nov 28, 2018 in ACGO, Seminars

Abstract: In the classic prophet inequality, a problem in optimal stopping theory, samples from independent random variables arrive online. A gambler that knows the distributions, but cannot see the future, must decide at each point in time whether to stop and pick the current sample or to continue and lose that sample forever. The goal of the gambler is to maximize the expected value of what she picks and the performance measure is the worst case ratio between the expected value the gambler gets and what a prophet, that sees all the...
